Market Hall Performing
Arts Centre

Peterborough, Ontario

The renovation of Peterborough’s historically designated Market Hall saw the ‘Hall’ portion of the building completely restored back to its original form with a new 350-seat performing arts venue inserted into the chamber. The design of the theatre allows for a variety of performance types with emphasis on dance and live music.

The aesthetics of the inserted elements are clean and transparent in order to take advantage of the great volume of the ‘Hall’ and its acoustic properties. Blackout shutters have been designed to allow the large windows to be opened when appropriate, and 16 mechanized acoustic banners dampen the space for amplified concerts. There is a new lobby as well as back-of-house support spaces such as dressing rooms and a green room.
